Progressive start of operations on 12 October 2025

The Entry/Exit System (EES) of the European Union has been technically established and is ready for use in the Republic of Croatia. Its progressive start of operations will begin on 12 October 2025 in accordance with the decision at European Union level.  From that date, the system will be used at all international border crossing points and at those local border crossing points that were temporarily designated for international traffic pursuant to the Agreement between the Republic of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The EES is the new European Union information system that replaces the past practice of stamping travel documents. It automatically records personal data, travel document details, time and date of entry or exit of third country nationals, as well as any entry refusals of third-country nationals in the Republic of Croatia i.e. the Schengen area.

Upon their first entry into the Republic of Croatia i.e. the European Union, apart from travel document details, biometric data, namely four fingerprints and facial image, will be collected from third-country nationals who are subject to its application pursuant to Article 2 of the Regulation (EU) 2017/2226 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 30 November 2017.  These data will be stored in the system and used each time the person crosses the border thereafter. Each subsequent border crossing will involve verifying the live facial image against the existing file in the system, thus increasing security levels.

The system does not apply to European Union nationals regardless of their place of residence. Croatian nationals and other nationals of EU Member States living in neighbouring countries or any other third country will continue to cross the border by presenting their travel document or identity card. They will not be required to provide biometric data as part of this system.

All information on the Entry/Exit System (EES) and its application are available on the official EES website: Entry/Exit System (EES).
